Recent Timeline Regarding Trains and Railroad Accidents

October 10, 2007: A 112 car CSX train derails and erupts in flames causing the evacuation of over 1,000 nearby residents.  There were toxic chemicals released as a result of the derailment.

October 13, 2007: Ohio EPA says 6,000 gallons of ethanol released into Ohio’s waterways and the Mentor Marsh according to an October 13, 2007 news article in the Willoughby News-Herald.

October 16, 2007: The NTSB faults the January 7, 2007 Washington Metro derailment due to poor wheel maintenance.  The Sunday afternoon train derailment caused 6 passenger rail cars striking a tunnel wall and shattering glass.  There were 23 reported injuries from the derailment.  

October 17, 2007: House Bill Passed.  H.R. 2095 The Federal Rail Safety Inspection Act. Passed, 377-38, a bill (HR 2095) setting tougher federal requirements for railroad safety, including a 12-hour maximum workday for train and signal personnel. The bill renames the Federal Railroad Administration as the Federal Railroad Safety Administration and authorizes a four-year, $1.1 billion budget for the agency. Now awaiting Senate action, the bill requires railroads to submit plans for measures such as reducing worker injuries attributable to fatigue; safeguarding the shipment of toxic substances through cities; protecting motorists at grade crossings and stepping-up inspections of tracks and tunnels. The bill requires the Department of Transportation and the National Transportation Safety Board to monitor railroads' follow-through on their safety plans and overall compliance with federal standards.

October 18, 2007: At about 11:30 a.m., in Wright City, Oklahoma, a train strikes a log truck killing the truck driver and critically injuring the train engineer. The FRA is investigating. 

October 19, 2007: In Savannah, Georgia two tractor-trailer trucks and a train collided at approximately 9:00 a.m. releasing diesel fuel and spilling items from the truck.

October 20, 2007: At approximately 9:00 a.m. in Jackson County, Florida a train carrying toxic chemicals derails near Grand Ridge leading to the evacuation of several nearby residents.  24 rail cars and 3 locomotives jumped the tracks.

October 22, 2007: At about 2:00 p.m. a train derailed in Middlebury, Vermont sending approximately 12 cars full of gasoline off the tracks and causing two tanker cars of fuel to spill and leading to the evacuation of one square mile of the downtown area.  Some of the gasoline as been released and has flowed into nearby Otter Creek which, according to officials, will lead to a massive cleanup effort.
