The number of reported highway-rail collisions in Pennsylvania totaled 81 in the year 2007. This was an increase of almost one-third over the number of highway-rail collisions in 2006. These resulted in 26 deaths or injuries in 2007 an increase of over 60% since 2006. Over the ten year period of 1998 to 2007 there were 721 reported highway-rail collisions resulting in 230 deaths or injuries.

In 2006, a Pennsylvania train derailment accident occurred north of Pittsburgh, in New Brighton, when 24 cars of an 80 car train derailed off the tracks. The 24 cars plunged directly into the Beaver River. Many of these cars contained ethanol which caught on fire and resulted in traffic detours while Pennsylvania officials were cleaning up and taking care of the incident. After the Train Derailment, local residents were evacuated during the clean up process.
